We Prove that We are Not Completely Pitiful

We were into month eleven and there had been Daelkyr incursions getting closer to the area where we were housed. One night (yes, they do have reference to night and day and it actually corresponds to time above ground at the Ring of Storms) one of the incursions broke through the sanctuary lines and we became involved. As it turns out, Prof. Ren is quite good at spell-slinging and even the Umbragen were impressed with his skill. Jerrold is good at what he does, but he’s not heavy on the combat-oriented spells. He did have a nice little cantrip he’d picked up from the Umbragen that used some form of shadow energy and he did what he could with that. Gwen has spent most of her life in libraries and she knew better than to try and join in the fight. I’m not the greatest fighter but I am good at hiding. That and the bit of training I’d gotten from Valii and the Umbragen Eldritch Scout, Sarenni, gave me enough to be able to move about to relay messages and make the occasional sneak attack from hiding against the lesser fiends called dolgrims.

While darting around between groups I’d been sent to deliver a message to one of the higher up Eldritch Warriors, Ivaressin, who was leading one of the main attack forces. As I approached, I could see that her forces were being overrun and knew I could do nothing to help. That’s when I saw Ivaressin pull an orb of some sort from her pouch and shatter it at her feet.  A wave of fiery purple energy shot out in all directions and the most powerful of the creatures around her dropped. Unfortunately, so did she and her comrades. There were still a few dolgrims from the outskirts that were up and they began closing in on the shadow elves to finish them off. I took off at full speed to get to the Umbragen and got myself between them and the approaching dolgrims. They were greatly injured but I still doubted that I would be able to stop all four of them. But still, I had to try. Try I did, and I did manage to kill two of them with quick, precise attacks. However, the remaining two overwhelmed me and their spears jabbed and pierced my light leathers quickly sending me to darkness. I don’t know how long I was out, but luck was with me as Ivaressin had regained consciousness and had seen my sacrifice. She was able to kill the remaining creatures and stabilize me. It turns out that the attack was a massive one in which the Daelkyr had thrown most of their local assets to attempt to overwhelm the Umbragen. It was not a success and they (the Daelkyr) were forced to retreat. Though the Umbragen aren’t prone to celebration it was acknowledged that this was a major victory. Our group was recognized for their help and Ivaressin rewarded my acts with an adamantine dagger that was created for her by her brother, a smith, and an artist of some skill.
